The Supreme
Court Dinner is an opportunity for our entire legal community to
gather as colleagues in the profession of law and to honor the
service of our Supreme Court Justices. The citizens of the
state of Tennessee ask these individuals to develop the law in
Tennessee by making final decisions on the most difficult and
controversial legal questions possible, and we want them to know
that we appreciate their acceptance of that task and their
fairness, graciousness, eloquence and dedication in performing
their duties.
Our
program for the Supreme Court Dinner will focus solely on the
Tennessee Supreme Court and on Justice Barker’s retirement.
Chief Justice William M.
Barker
is retiring on September 15 after serving as a
Supreme Court justice for over 10 years. When Justice
Barker retires, he will have been a judge for 25 years. He
has served as a circuit court judge from 1983 until 1995, and as
a member of the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals from 1995
until 1998. Prior to becoming a circuit court judge, he
spent 14 years in the private practice of law with the law firm
of Dietzen, Dietzen & Barker.
